This paper is a practical study of visual design principles; covering topics such as visual design techniques, typography, colour, digital images, designing for computer displays and the web.

It challenges students to combine their typographic skills and their knowledge of the principles of Design in order to practically solve design problems. A combination of exercises and assignments involving Research and basic visual communication using type and image will synthesize these design skills.

Throughout the paper the arrangement of typography is treated formally and expressively within specified.

This paper is taught through a series of lectures and studios. The paper relies on Moodle for the communication with the students.

Class attendance and active participation is expected. The course notes provided are not comprehensive, additional material will be covered in class. Students are responsible for all material covered in class.

Students are expected to devote a lot of time to practical work. Simply turning in the first attempt at each practical is not acceptable. Students should experiment with concepts discussed in class to gain a full understanding.

Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:

  • Combine their previously acquired knowledge
    In order to practically solve design problems, the students will use and expand their typographic skills and their knowledge of the principles of design.

    Using typography, forms and images the students will synthesise these designs skills.

  • Use typography in a formal and expressive way
